IAPN Provides Written Testimony on Controversial Import Restrictions on Cypriot Coins, Possible Import Restrictions on Coins From Guatemala and Peru

2026-10-08 20:38 | Peter Tompa (Administrator)

IAPN has provided written testimony on a proposal to extend controversial import restrictions on "Cypriot" coins.  IAPN has also provided written testimony on proposed extensions of Cultural Property Agreements (CPAs) with Guatemala and Peru opposing any new import restrictions on coins.

IAPN does not oppose a renewal of the CPA with Cyprus but does oppose continuation of controversial import restrictions on Cypriot coins. IAPN argues a major reset is justified by recent revelations that the initial decision to impose import restrictions on coins was marred by at least an appearance of conflict of interest involving the State Department decision-maker as well as a new court decision underscoring the need for due process before cultural goods are forfeited.
